What Happens in Vegas
In a different vein is the 2008 film What Happens in Vegas. A romantic comedy, it stars Cameron Diaz as a woman dumped by her boyfriend, and Ashton Kutcher as a man who has just been fired from his job by his own father. With respective friends in tow, they leave New York for Vegas to drown their sorrows, and meet by chance as a result of a mix up over their rooms. The foursome spend the night getting drunk and, whilst under the influence, Diaz and Kutcher get married. In the sober light of day, they agree on an annulment, but suddenly begin to bicker about who's dumping who. Then, just before checking out, he puts one of her quarters into a slot machine and wins a $3 million jackpot. Get the picture? Back in New York and in court to sort things out, the judge, sick of the bickering, denies their request for an annulment, freezes the money, and sentences them to live together for six months. The verdict? Whoever sues for divorce first will lose all the cash.
Should they survive the six months each will get half. And if they refuse to accept the judgement, the money will be tied up in so much litigation neither of them will see a penny. So follows an amusing if predictable story, about a warring couple thrown together against their will. They spend most of the time being abusively juvenile until, miraculously, they discover they've fallen in love.
The critics hated it. In the words of Tim Evans, 'What Happens in Vegas should have stayed in Vegas.' However, the majority of IMDb users gave it a resounding thumbs up. 'The best comedy to come out in a long, long time,' said one, and 'An unexpected treat,' said another. I suppose it all depends on how far you can suspend belief. But at least it shouldn't leave you feeling like slashing your wrists or reaching for the bottle. Well, hopefully not.
