Sour Grapes

Slot machines bring out the worst in people. That's the message of the 1998 film, Sour Grapes. Written and directed by Larry David of Seinfeld fame, this is a black, satirical look at greed and envy. Two cousins in Atlantic City are playing the slots, when one runs out of money. Borrowing a couple of coins from the other, the penniless player wins a $436,000 jackpot. Obviously, the cousin who loaned the money feels he is entitled to a share but fails to ask. The winner, on the other hand, wants to keep the lot.

As a token of thanks, he offers his partner a cheque for a paltry $1,000. What follows is a series of petty revenge attacks, with family and friends taking sides. And when the winner finally increases his offer to 3%, he is suddenly diagnosed with a terminal illness and told he has just three months to live.

This, presumably, is the moral of the story. A movie that has been hailed as an 'Entertaining Seinfeld spin off with an awful cast,' and 'A film that has so much wrong with it, it's easy to forget that it isn't quite the worst movie ever made', it's only likely to appeal to diehard Seinfeld fans. But viewers be warned. The ending has been described as a total non-event.
