Rat Race

Rat Race
Take the 2001 screwball comedy, Rat Race. Eccentric, gambling-obsessed, mega-rich casino mogul (John Cleese), on the lookout for something new for his high rollers to bet on, plants six lucky tokens in six different slot machines. The finders are offered the chance to win $2 million. All they have to do is race each other from Las Vegas to New Mexico, then find a train station locker in a place called Silver City where the loot is stashed. There are six teams. The distance is seven hundred miles. The odds are 6-1. The rules are simple. Get there first! The teams are a colourful bunch and, unbeknown to them, the casino mogul and his billionaire buddies are betting on the outcome. Of course, it's utter nonsense with absurd scenes ranging from errant cows to a woman selling squirrels. The movie appears to be trying to say something about greed in a madcap sort of way, but most of the message is lost in the insanity of the chase.
Referred to as both 'The funniest film ever made', and 'The worst comedy movie I have ever seen,' I guess it's all down to what makes you laugh. Whatever. It's slapstick. It's zany. And there isn't a suicidal addict or gun-toting gangster to be seen.
