Even Money
The 2006 film Even Money is a good example of the latter. Amongst the star-studded cast there is Kim Basinger, a novelist, losing her family's fortune in the slots and Forest Whitaker, a handyman, who is in debt to the bookies and needs his basket-ball playing brother to fix a match. Tim Roth plays the ubiquitous, hard-nosed gangster, who may be guilty (and probably is), of a series of murders. This is not just about slot machines, but gambling in general. However, the message is loud and clear. It's that old cliche. Gambling is dangerous and addictive. Lives fall apart. End of story. The film has been described as 'A beautiful, realistic story of an ugly gambling addiction', and 'An attempt to manufacture a prestige picture by throwing talented actors at a script whose most complex insight appears to be gambling is bad.' Either way, love it or hate it, there are no jackpots and it isn't a barrel of laughs.
