The slot machine, arguably the most popular form of gambling the world has known.

Originally invented in 1881 to mimic a simple game of poker by pulling a lever to spin reels with card symbols printed on them, the slot machine or One Armed Bandit as it became known, was an instant hit in the bars of New York City, USA.

Winning players received no payouts, often just a free beer.

Gradually the machines became more sophisticated, first with automated payout systems that dispensed fruit flavoured bubble gum, hence the name fruit machine, and later 'hold' features to increase the players chances of winning. Until today when they are controlled by computer like software systems.

The once humble slot machine can now be found all over the world in bars, clubs, even take away food outlets.

Most importantly, for the gaming industry it has become a major source of income for casinos everywhere.
